The DACA application benefits are numerous. The application is used to request a work permit to the United States and the program is recognized by North American law. In this article, we will talk about the advantages of this application, what the DACA program means, what are its benefits, and how it works.
What is the DACA application?
The DACA application is commonly known by its acronym, which stands for Deferred Action for the Majority. The program was created and authorized by executive decree in 2012 and is a great opportunity for young immigrants to take advantage of their possibilities to access public services, obtain a work permit and enjoy tax benefits.
2012 was a historic year for immigrant youth, as the DACA application represents the first government deferred action program for certain categories.
What are the benefits of applying DACA?
An accepted application increases the chances that a young immigrant can access government services and benefits, such as:
- Access the state identification (ID) card without a criminal record.
- Have permission to work legally in any company in the country. Most of them do not require the document, only with the photo ID or school license of the applicant. If you are over sixteen (16) years old, you can apply for DACA even if you do not have a driver’s license.
- Have access to health insurance and social assistance. This means that you are covered by all government programs for the poor like Medicaid (health insurance) or SNAP (food assistance). With the application, you may be eligible for many benefits from the federal government, such as: special monetary subsidy with less financial limitations; federal scholarships for higher education; and opportunities offered to legal permanent residents, such as access to driver’s licenses.
- Have a legal job in any company in the country without having to provide information about your immigration status. Under the rules currently in force, DACA can be voluntarily waived by the beneficiary if they do not wish to use it to apply for a work permit in their own name or to remain in the United States.
- Be eligible for a driver’s license if you are over sixteen (16) years old at the time of application and have not been convicted of any crime or serious misconduct.
How does the DACA application work?
To begin with, each applicant needs to verify their current immigration status before they can apply for this program:
Once the appropriate category that corresponds to your personal background and the years you have resided in the country has been identified, the application can be made. If you meet all the requirements and are within the eligibility conditions established by DHS (Department of Homeland Security), through the use of your green or red card you will have access to the DACA application within a maximum period of ninety (90 ) days two (2) times a year.
The application can be submitted by phone to the DACA line at the national center, via postal mail to a specific address or even through the electronic format available.
What is expected of the DACA application under President Biden's administration?
Although a new executive order approved by president Biden has yet to be published, authorities expect the DACA application to remain operational and remain in effect under his administration.
Thus, everything related to work permits for young immigrants will be renewable every two (2) years or until sooner if there is some type of legal incident that can be registered in the applicant’s files. From 2012 to 2015 more than 700,000 applications have been accepted.
If you are in the United States and consider that you meet all the requirements to be eligible for the DACA Program, it is recommended that you have the advice of an immigration attorney, who will keep you abreast of changes in immigration policies and instruct you about of how you can proceed to make your request.
